Comprehensive Text Statistics for Writers and Marketers
Hitting precise word counts is critical whether you are drafting a university essay with strict assignment guidelines, authoring a 160-character meta description for search engine optimization, or scripting a timed speech.
Toolnova Word Counter analyzes your prose in real-time as you type. It breaks down your text into words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, and distinct paragraphs. Furthermore, it computes estimated reading time (benchmarked at 200 words per minute) and speaking time (130 wpm).
With zero latency and full privacy, your drafts, creative manuscripts, and internal business memorandums remain strictly confidential.
Key features & capabilities
Frequently asked questions about Word Counter
Common questions about usage, privacy, limits, and browser compatibility.
Does the word counter count spaces?
The tool shows two character totals: one that includes spaces and line breaks, and one that removes all whitespace. The word count is tracked separately and never counts a space as a word. Use the no-spaces figure when a form enforces a character limit that ignores spacing.
How does it treat hyphenated words and contractions?
Hyphenated terms such as state-of-the-art count as one word, and contractions like don't stay together as a single word because the apostrophe is kept. Standalone numbers also count as words. Punctuation such as em dashes, slashes, and colons splits the text into separate words.
Is my text uploaded or saved anywhere?
Counting happens entirely in your browser, so drafts, essays, and internal notes never leave your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server, and clearing the box or closing the tab removes the text. That makes the tool safe for confidential manuscripts and client work.
How are reading time and speaking time estimated?
Reading time uses an average pace of 200 words per minute, while speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute. Both figures are estimates, so dense technical text or a slow, deliberate delivery will take longer. Treat them as a planning guide for scripts, presentations, and articles rather than an exact stopwatch.
Can I download my results?
Two download buttons are available: one saves the original text as a .txt file, and the other saves an analysis report. The report lists the date, word and character counts, sentence and paragraph totals, reading and speaking times, and the full text. Both files are created on your device.
Why does my word count differ from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Different tools split text into words in slightly different ways, especially around hyphens, apostrophes, numbers, and symbols. Toolnova keeps hyphenated compounds and contractions together and counts standalone numbers as words. Small differences of a few words are normal, so leave a little buffer when you have a strict limit.
